Day 3 September 19th: Venice (B,D)
Ready, set, go! This morning we'll meet a local guide who will give us a personal introduction to Venice’s backstreets, churches and canals. Our tour will begin with a visit to St. Mark's Square. Praised by Napoleon as the most beautiful drawing room in Europe, this spacious square is the only one in Venice to merit the title "piazza." Its graceful Renaissance arches shelter some of the city's most elegant shops and historic cafes. At the piazza's eastern end rises the St. Mark's Basilica with its multitude of marble pillars and five white domes. Begun by Greek architects in 1063 to house the relics of the patron saint St. Mark the Evangelist, the church is a treasure-chest of mosaic decoration both inside and out. We will climb to the gallery level to admire these glittering, golden mosaics at close range and to see the four ancient gilt-bronze horses stolen from Constantinople in 1204 to grace the basilica's facade. A short walk takes us to the lively neighborhood around the Rialto Bridge. On the opposite side of the Grand Canal is the fish market, displaying all the rich bounty of the Adriatic Sea, and nearby is the Franciscan church of Santa Maria dei Frari with precious altarpieces by Titian and Giovanni Bellini. We will also visit the Ca'Rezzonico, the most magnificent palace on the Grand Canal. With its lacquered antique furniture and frescoed ceilings, it has the authentic atmosphere of a great 18th century house. The late afternoon is at leisure and we will end our evening with a "Welcome" dinner together.

Overnight Venice

Day 4 September 20th: Venice – Gemona – Lake Bled (B, L, D)
This morning after breakfast we say good-bye to Venice and head to the lake area of Slovenia. On our way we will stop in the historic town of Gemona. Surrounded by a frame of mountains and hills, Gemona is set in a rich natural environment that invites anyone to a visit. Devastated by the disastrous earthquake in 1976, Gemona is nowadays a symbol of rebirth not only for the town itself, but also for the entire region. We'll visit a town renewed in its architectonic aspect, although you'll be surprised to see how the reconstruction has respected the original splendor in every slightest detail.

Among the ancient medieval monuments that have been wonderfully restored, we'll admire the Town Hall, with its harmonious Renaissance lines in Venetian Lombard taste and the splendid Cathedral, one of the most expressive examples of Gothic-Romanesque architecture existing in the region. After our included have lunch in a local restaurant and then continue to Lake Bled. The late afternoon is at leisure and we will meet for dinner at our hotel.
Overnight Lake Bled
Day 5 September 21st: Lake Bled (B,D)
Welcome to Lake Bled! After our included breakfast we will set out to explore. Lake Bled is an earthly paradise. A beautiful glacial lake in the Julian Alps, set amid forests and mountains. We will take a boat ride with a ‘Pletna’ – traditional boat made by locals and reach the only true island in Slovenia. Here we will visit Bled Castle and its museum.  After our cruise we will sample the famous Bled’s cream cake. This afternoon we will return to our hotel. Later we will meet for dinner.

We will enjoy a cave tour and ride in the famous cave train. The Postojna Cave train has been taking visitors around the cave for 140 years. Its 3.7-kilometre long journey begins at the train-boarding platform of the unique cave railway, where – especially in the summer – a lot of hustle and bustle is present, the kind that is otherwise typical of the world's largest railway stations. In 1818, just over 300 meters were accessible, whereas today visitors get to enjoy more than 5 kilometers of the show cave passage.  After our visit we will enjoy lunch in a local restaurant en-route to Croatia. After Lunch we will continue on a short drive to the beautiful coastal city of Opatija set in the Istria region of Croatia. Day 8 September 24th : Opatija – Rovinj - Porec - Opatjia (B,L)
This morning we embark on a full day tour of the beautiful Istria Peninsula of Croatia. Our first visit will be to the beautiful coastal medieval city of Rovinj where will have a walking tour (wear comfortable shoes). Rovinj, the Blue Pearl of the Adriatic, the city of romance and art, one of the most picturesque towns in the Mediterranean. Part of the Venetian Republic for over 500 years, the Old Town is perched on an elevated peninsula, surrounded by Venetian terracotta-roofed houses and crowned by the Church of St. Euphemy from the 18th century whose bell tower dominates the Rovinj silhouette. The cramped area of the former island dictated the appearance of the town that is characterized by high houses, narrow paved streets and small squares.

Old cobbled alleys in the Old Town invite visitors to walk around and explore colorful galleries and shops filled with local arts and crafts. In the open-air market visitors will find fresh groceries such as asparagus, olives, tomatoes, herbs and medicinal plants, figs and cheese. The Italian influence is much stronger here than anywhere else in Croatia and the main square is surrounded with lively cafes and restaurants spreading out all the way to the charming harbor filled with sailing and fishing boats. We will enjoy a wonderful lunch typical of the special meals Focus Travel is well known for. After lunch we will continue to the small Roman town of Porec. The whole old city of Porec is monument of culture. The old city has preserved the structure of old Roman cestrum. The main streets, Decumanus and Cardo Maximus, are still preserved in their original forms. Decumanus connected the square Marafor in the western part of old city with city gates at its eastern end. Roman Forum with temples to Roman gods was located on the Marafor square. There is still today a Romanic house and a few beautiful Venetian gothic palaces. The Istrian Assembly Hall, originally a 13th century gothic Franciscan church, was remade in baroque style in the 18th century. Porec was surrounded with fortification walls from 12th to 19th century. Three defense towers still exist at the entrance of the old city. After our visit we will return to our hotel. Dinner is on our own tonight.

Overnight in Opatija

Day 9 September 25th: Opatija – Draga – Opatija (B)
After breakfast we will make a short visit to the seaside fisherman’s village of Moscenicka Draga. This picturesque village was formed in the 19th century when inhabitants of Moscenice, a medieval town situated on a hilltop above, decided to move closer to the sea and develop a new community. Founded as a fishing village, today Moscenicka Draga has a small marina, a symbol of what the city was established upon. It has a true Mediterranean atmosphere from the architecture to the everyday way of life. Over the years, more and more travelers found out about this little secret along the Adriatic Coast and helped turn it into what it is today – a top tourist destination on the Opatija Riviera. We will return to Opatija where will have the rest of the afternoon at leisure to relax or explore on our own.
