Daily Itinerary

Day 1 - April 19, 2023: Fly from Denver to Lisbon Overnight
Day 2 - April 20, 2023: Arrive Lisbon - Coimbra (D) After clearing Customs and Immigration, we will depart with our guide and transfer to Coimbra. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Welcome dinner at local restaurant. Overnight: Tivoli Coimbra or similar
Day 3 - April 21, 2023: Coimbra (B,D) Today tour the best of Coimbra, Aveiro and Costa Nova. You will visit the Coimbra University Library, Built in the early eighteenth century at the behest of Portugal’s King John V, the library was constructed to house the book collection of the University of Coimbra. Today it is one of the most significant archival libraries in the world. It contains some 56,000 volumes, many of which date from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. Aveiro is known for their canals. While here you will enjoy a relaxing boat trip on these canals and also the local tourist train to see the highlights of the city, such as the beautifully tiled train station. Stop to explore Costa Nova and see the famous haystacks. These traditional structures were painted in bright colored stripes and were used by fisherman to store their fishing materials. Return to Coimbra. Dinner at local restaurant. Overnight: Tivoli Coimbra or similar
Day 4 - April 22, 2023: Coimbra - Porto - Embark ship (B,D) Check out of your hotel and transfer through the Portuguese countryside to Porto where you will board the AmaDouro Ship Overnight: AMA Waterways Built in 2019, the AmaDouro features spacious, elegantly appointed staterooms, most of which include balconies to take in views of the breathtaking hills and terraced vineyards along the river. Staterooms also include Entertainment-On-Demand, featuring free high-speed Internet access, unlimited Wi-Fi, movies, music and English-language TV stations; climate-controlled air conditioning; and an in-room safe. The AmaDouro’s Panoramic Lounge is a stylish and inviting space to enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail along with our nightly entertainment. The ship also features a massage room, fitness room, sun-deck swimming pool and a gift shop, as well as the culinary delights of the Main Restaurant, where you’ll be able to sample the region’s famous Port wine.
Day 5 - April 23, 2023 Régua (B,L,D) Begin your day with a tour of the 18th-century Palacio Anadia, or Palace of the Counts, known for its beautiful interior and Baroque style. Inside the house, you’ll see intricate panels of blue and white tiles throughout the rooms and a striking vaulted ceiling that retell the history behind the palace. Overnight: AMA Waterways
Day 6 - April 24, 2023 Régua - Pinhão (B,L,D) Travel to picturesque Lamego, home to one of the most important pilgrimage sites in all of Portugal, where you’ll go to the Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies). The shrine features a staircase of nearly 700 steps, beautifully decorated with white and blue tiles, which the more active adventurer will want to climb on a guided hike. Concluding both tours, you will have the opportunity to sample local traditional specialties, such as bôlas de Lamego, bread filled with smoked ham; presunto, a type of dry-cured ham; and Espumante, a Portuguese sparkling wine. You’ll then go to the formal Episcopal Palace Museum. Later in the day, savor the flavors of Portugal’s renowned fortified wine, vinho do porto, made exclusively in the Douro Valley. Head to a local quinta for your authentic Port-wine tasting experience and enjoy the sweet nectar of this fascinating region. Overnight: AMA Waterways
Day 7 - April 25, 2023 Vega de terrón (B,L,D) Drive to Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built of golden sandstone, Salamanca is known as a “living museum,” and you will have an opportunity to step back in time to the Middle Ages during your escorted tour, which includes the city’s elegant university buildings, the New Cathedral, the intriguingly decorated House of Shells and Plaza Mayor. Overnight: AMA Waterways
Day 8 - April 26, 2023 Barca D’Alva - Pinhão (B,L,D) Spend time soaking up the beauty of the Douro River as you cruise to Barca d’Alva, where you will visit Castelo Rodrigo, a small fortified village perched high on a hilltop with centuries-old walls, steep narrow streets and fantastic views. You can also opt to hike up to the village should you wish a more active exploration. While here, taste some delicious locally grown produce. Be treated to an exclusive dinner at Quinta da Avessada, where you’ll enjoy an authentic and traditional dining experience complete with entertainment. Quinta da Avessada is also a fascinating interactive museum commemorating the history and culture of wine in the Alto Douro region, so you’ll have fun discovering all the various stages of wine production as well as doing plenty of tasting. Overnight: AMA Waterways
Day 9 - April 27, 2023 Entreosrios (B,L,D) EntreosRios translates to “between the rivers,” and this small village is, quite appropriately, located at the confluence of the Tâmega and Douro rivers. This tranquil village offers an authentic slice of Douro River life. In the afternoon, indulge in a traditional Portuguese lunch with your fellow travelers in EntreosRios at a local quinta – a country estate – for a truly authentic culinary experience. Overnight: AMA Waterways
Day 10 - April 28, 2023 Porto (B,L,D) The colorful city of Porto blends the best of old and new, which you can discover on an escorted tour of the historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the Cathedral, one of the city’s oldest monuments; and the São Bento Railway Station, known for its blue and white tile panels depicting scenes from Portuguese history. You’ll also enjoy a tasting of Port, Portugal’s most renowned contribution to the world of wine. If you prefer to get more active, you can go on a guided hike and then enjoy a Port wine tasting. Enjoy a free afternoon to explore all of Porto’s charms on your own. Overnight: AMA Waterways
Day 11 - April 29, 2023 Porto - Disembark ship - Lisbon (B,D) Ride through the Portuguese countryside. Stop in Tomar and visit the castle of the Knights Templar, the walls of which envelop the elaborate Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site from the 12th century boasting spectacular frescoes and azulejos (iconic blue painted tiles). Continue to Lisbon for a three night stay. Dinner at local restaurant Overnight: Hotel Mundial
Day 12 - April 30, 2023 Lisbon (B,D) One of Europe’s most beautiful cities, Lisbon stretches across several hills along the Tagus River. On your escorted tour, you’ll see Belem Tower, a fortified four-story tower made of limestone, and visit the Late Gothic Jerónimos Monastery, the burial place of many Portuguese kings and heroes. You will also taste a typical Portuguese pastry, Pastéis de Belém, before going to Discoveries Monument, built in honor of Portugal’s greatest maritime explorers. Dinner at local restaurant. Overnight: Hotel Mundial
Day 13 - May 1, 2023 Lisbon (B,D) Enjoy a morning excursion to Serra de Sintra, one of the most picturesque mountain villages in Portugal, a former summer residence of the Portuguese royal family and a source of inspiration for Lord Byron and generations of other artists and poets. Your guided tour includes a visit to the Pena National Palace, a fairy tale castle situated high on a rocky peak, followed by free time to explore on your own. Farewell dinner at local restaurant. Overnight: Hotel Mundial
Day 14 - May 2, 2023 Depart Lisbon (B) Transfer to airport for flight home.
Optional Post Madrid Excursion Day 14 - May 2, 2023 Lisbon - Madrid (D) Transfer to airport for flight to Madrid. Fly to Madrid. Meet local guide at Madrid airport. Transfer to hotel with panoramic tour en route. Afternoon at leisure. Transfer to Tapas dinner tonight. Imagine an evening surrounded by locals, trying traditional food and Spanish wines while going around the ancient lively neighborhoods learning about Spanish culture and people. The evening includes tapas and wine tasting at 3 different restaurants. Overnight: Rui Plaza Hotel or similar
Day 15 - May 3, 2023 Madrid & Toledo (B,L) Meet guide this morning for a full day tour to Toldeo. The Imperial city of Toledo – A World Heritage city - seems to be one large museum. Hardly any other town is so well conserved in its historical style. Home to three different cultures – Christian, Moorish and Jewish – that coexisted together for centuries. Their influences have left many architectural and artistic reminders all over the city.
Your tour includes Interior visit of the stunning gothic cathedral, walk thru the Jewish quarter and pass by the Tránsito synagogue, interior visit of the Santo Tome Church to see the El Greco masterpiece , pass by the San Cristo de la Luz mosque and the elaborate cloisters of San Juan de los Reyes and lunch at a local restaurant. Return to Madrid for dinner and evening on own. Overnight: Rui Plaza Hotel or similar
Day 16 - May 4, 2023 Madrid (B,D) After breakfast, Visit the famous Prado Museum, which is a living proof of the richness and magnitude of Spanish art. The artworks in the museum outlines Spain’s rich history from its golden age in 11th century to its slow fade in 18th century. Appreciate the works of Spain’s most famous artists like Picasso, Francesco de Goya, Velasquez and El Bosch amongst others. Afternoon on own. Tonight transfer to a special Flamenco dinner show with guide. Overnight: Rui Plaza Hotel or similar
