Arrive in Frankfurt, where your full-time bilingual tour manager will provide a warm welcome.  Begin your exploration right away, with a visit to the Gutenberg Museum Mainz, one of the oldest printing museums in the world, and home to two mid-15th century Gutenberg Bibles, with a guided tour.  Gutenberg’s invention of the movable-type printing press meant that Bibles and books could effectively be produced in large quantities in a short period of time, and this was essential to the success of the Reformation.  Your local guide will familiarize you with the area during a panoramic drive.  There is free time for lunch provided during your sightseeing.  Continue on to your hotel, and refresh after your journey. This evening, enjoy a light dinner at a local restaurant, and then a restful sleep.
  • Dinner:  two-course, table water and bread, with coffee and tea
  • Overnight at non-central, 4-star Leonardo Royal Hotel, or similar
Day 3: THURSDAY, JUNE 8, 2017 - WEIMAR (B/D)
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, and each day for the remainder of your trip.  Explorations of the Reformation continue today, as you journey to Weimar.  Along the way, there is a scheduled stop in Eisenach for sightseeing with a local guide.  Here you will visit both the Luther House and Wartburg Castle.  The Luther House is an important museum, and located in the house where Luther lived with the Cotta family while studying at the local Latin school for three years.  Later, Martin Luther spent 10 weeks hiding in Wartburg Castle as he translated the New Testament from Ancient Greek to German to make it more accessible in an everyday language.  Your day ends in Weimar, where you can check-in to your hotel and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Welcome Dinner:  three-course, table water and bread, beverage (one glass of red wine, white wine, or beer), with coffee and tea
  • Accommodations:  centrally located, 4-star Best Western Grand Hotel Russischer Hof, or similar

Day 4: FRIDAY, JUNE 9, 2017 - WEIMAR (B/L)
This morning there is an excursion to Eisleben with a local guide.  Martin Luther was born here in 1483, and the town is also known as Lutherstadt Eisleben or Luther-City Eisleben because of its significance.  While he spent most of his life in Erfurt and Wittenberg, he was in Eisleben in 1546 on family business and would die there as well.  Here you will tour Martin Luther’s Geburtshaus and Sterbehaus.  The city took great care to preserve both the “birth” and “death” houses, and have created significant museums in both locations.  Lunch is provided at a local restaurant today (instead of dinner).  This afternoon there is a visit to Martin Luther’s spiritual home of Erfurt.  A local guide will share with you the dramatic personal incident in his life which caused him to undertake monastic vows and enter the Augustinian Monastery.  See Erfurt Cathedral, and other interesting places such as the Luther Monument, St. Michael’s Church, and visit the Augustinian Monastery.  Return to Weimar, and enjoy the evening at your leisure.  Dinner is under your own arrangements; your tour manager can provide suggestions for both restaurants and evening activities.
  • Lunch:  two-course, table water and bread
  • Accommodations:  centrally located, 4-star Best Western Grand Hotel Russischer Hof, or similar

Day 5: SATURDAY, JUNE 10, 2017 - LEIPZIG (B/D)
The morning is free for to enjoy Weimar with your tour manager, who will take you to visit the gorgeous St. Peter and Paul Church (Herder Church).  One of the many local UNESCO Heritage sites, it is also home to the legendary Cranach triptych altar, one of the world’s greatest relics of Reformation history.  This afternoon, continue your travels in the footsteps of Martin Luther, as you transfer to Leipzig.  Settle into your hotel and refresh.  This evening enjoy an early dinner at a local restaurant, and then attend a local concert performance this evening at a local venue (subject to scheduling availability; included in the tour is a 30 Euro per person budget for tickets).
  • Dinner:  three course, table water and bread, with coffee and tea
  • Accommodations:  centrally located, 4-star ANA Symphonie, or similar

Day 6: SUNDAY, JUNE 11, 2017 - LEIPZIG (B/L)
Enjoy a music-themed walking tour of the city, and its delightful pedestrian friendly Old Town.  Your local guide will discuss Martin Luther’s participation in the July 17, 1519 debate, for which he was later declared a heretic, and which ultimately served as a turning point for both German and Christian history.  Additional highlights of your stroll are the Mendelssohn Haus, Bach Museum, and the Thomaskirche.  The Mendelssohn Haus is located in the apartment where the composer lived in the 1800’s.  The living room features the composer’s original furniture and articles from his life. The Bach Museum presents the life and works of Johann Sebastian Bach and his family in an interactive multimedia exhibition, including the treasure room, where original Bach manuscripts and other precious items are on display.  The St. Thomas Church is the city’s main Lutheran church where Bach was the cantor from 1723 until his death in 1750.  Here is the location of his remains,
and a statue of Bach by the Leipzig sculptor Carl Seffner stands next to the church. This afternoon, enjoy lunch at the historic Auerbachs Keller.  The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure, and dinner is under your own arrangements.
  • Lunch:  two-course, table water and bread (Auerbachs Keller)
  • Accommodations:  centrally located, 4-star ANA Symphonie, or similar
Day 7: MONDAY, JUNE 12, 2017 - BERLIN (B/D)
Today’s journey takes you from Leipzig to Berlin.  There is an important stop in Wittenberg en route, for a guided tour of the Luther sites including the Luther Haus, Stadtkirche, and All Saint’s Church (Schlosskirche).  The Luther Haus is considered by many to be the most interesting Reformation museum in Germany, and is located in the Augustinian monastery where Luther lived, first as a monk and later with his family.  In addition to the well-preserved rooms that were used by Luther, the museum contains an unsurpassed collection of Reformation manuscripts and artifacts.  The Stadtkirche, also known as City Church and the “Mother Church of the Reformation,” is where Luther did most of his preaching in Wittenberg.  And in 1517, Luther famously nailed his 95 Theses on the door of the Schlosskirche, which contains the tombs of Luther, Philip Melanchthon, and Frederick the Wise.  Afterward, continue to Berlin for dinner and the overnight.
  • Dinner:  three-course, table water and bread, with coffee and tea
  • Accommodations:  centrally located, 4-star Wyndham Berlin Excelsior, or similar
