Many people who visit Iceland experience much colder temperatures back home. You can expect the average low of 28.4 F and the average high 37.4 F. in February. In Akureyri the average high in February is 33.8 F with a low of 24.8. F. The chance of precipitation in the month of February is high and can come in all forms. Given Iceland’s famously capricious weather, you could get rain, snow, sleet and blue skies all in one day! In February you can expect sunrise at 9:15 AM and sunset at 5:15 PM.

You may also visit the old fishing harbor and when possible, the famous fish market. Explore Hofdi House where the all-important summit between President Ronald Reagan and Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev took place in 1986. DAY 3: Journey to the north
(B, L, D)
After breakfast our northern adventure begins! As our coach begins its northward drive, Iceland’s extraordinary scenery unfolds.
Our first stop is at Grabrok. The Grabrokargigar craters are natural monuments preserving the 3 scoria cones which belongs to the Snaefellsnes volcanic zone. They are believed to be somewhat younger than 3600 years.
Our journey continues to Blonduos, where we will eat lunch. Lakes and rivers surround Blonduos and the river Blanda, the longest in Iceland, runs right through the town. Some of the country’s best salmon and trout fishing is to be had in this area. After enjoying lunch, we will visit the Icelandic salmon center, where we will learn everything about the Icelandic salmon.
From Blonduos we drive to Saudarkrokur where we will visit The
Tannery Visitor Centre. The Tannery Visitor Centre in
Saudarkrokur is in Iceland’s only working tannery. At the Centre, visitors have access to the tannery, and its leather products, in an unusually direct manner. Visitors can observe the entire tanning process from start to finish, and see for themselves how fish skin is processed to make high-quality leather for use in design, crafts and manufacturing.
Leaving the tannery, we will continue our journey to Siglufjordur for dinner and overnight.
Siglufjordur is known as an enjoyably remote fishing village and a highlight of any northwest tour of Iceland. The town clings precariously to the foot of steep mountain walls which enclose an isolated, narrow fjord on the very edge of Iceland. The Arctic Circle is barely 40km away. Although Siglufjordur’s herring fishing heyday is past, a visitor can still see fishermen mending their nets and fish hanging on drying racks.
(Tonight it is possible to see the northern lights if weather conditions are good).
DAY 4 – The Secrets of Skagafjordur
(B, L, D)
After breakfast we will drive to Holar in Hjaltadal valley. An ancient bishop seat and important historical site, it is located to the east of Skagafjordur. It currently has a female ordaining bishop.
Holar has a population of around 100. It is full of ancient history and is the site of the main campus of Holar University College, a site of historical buildings and archeological excavation, Holar cathedral and the turf house Nyibær.
Lunch in Hofsos.
After lunch we will visit the Icelandic emigration center in the small town Hofsos. The Icelandic Emigration Center was founded in 1996 and dedicated to commemorate Icelandic emigrants to North America and to promote connections between their descendants and the people of Iceland. The Center now offers four exhibits in three separate buildings, as well as a genealogical information service, library facilities and more. The exhibitions combine text, photographs and tableaux to illustrate the conditions in Iceland that influenced the decision to emigrate, the journey to the ‘New World’ and the new way of life immigrants encountered.
Following our visit to the emigration center, we will have the opportunity of experiencing the famous swimming pool in Hofsos. Designed by the same architect responsible for the Blue Lagoon, the new swimming pool in Hofsos is quite simply magnificent, and the views over to Drangey are breathtaking. Although it is not strictly an infinity pool, the impression you get as you swim in the geothermal waters is that you’re right next to the sea’s edge.
After enjoying a swim, we drive back to Siglufjordur for dinner and overnight.
(It will be possible to see the northern lights tonight if weather conditions are good).
DAY 5 – Eyjafjordur & Myvatn Adventure (B, L, D)
Breakfast at the hotel.
Today, after breakfast we will go to the Herring Era Museum. The museum is officially recognized as specializing in the history of the herring industry in Iceland. It is likely the only museum of its kind in the world. The award winning maritime and industrial museum highlights the ‘glory days’ of Iceland’s herring fisheries and industry in three different buildings: Róaldsbrakki, a 1907 salting station and bunkhouse. Grána, a 1930s era fish meal and oil factory, and The Boathouse, the town’s thriving harbor of the 1950s with many old fishing boats at the dock. The Herring Era Museum was the winner of the Icelandic Museum Award 2000 and won the European Museum Award 2004, as Europe’s best new museum of industry and technology.
Lunch in Akureyri
After lunch we will enjoy a full day around magnificent Lake Myvatn. Our first stop will be at Godafoss waterfall. Called the Waterfall of the Gods, Godafoss is renowned as Iceland’s most beautiful waterfall. We will pass the valley of Reykjadalur to Skutustadir in the Myvatn district. Explore the irregular shaped pseudo craters formed in a volcanic eruption approx. 2300 years ago. And view Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth.
Myatn is a shallow eutrophic lake secluded in an area of active volcanism not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands are exceptionally rich in waterbirds. The landscape is dominated by volcanic landflows such as lava pillars and roofless vents. Winter in Myatn – during the dark nights, when the ground is covered with snow – is the time to experience the Aurora Borealis. Keep silent. Watch. Even hear the lights as they dance through the sky.
Dinner and overnight in Myvatn.
(Possible to see the northern lights if weather conditions are good).
DAY 6 – Husavik & Myvatn Nature Baths (B, L, D)
After breakfast we will continue our journey to Husavik, a harbour town of 2,237 inhabitants famous for its wooden church. Husavik is reputedly the first place in Iceland to be settled by a Norse man. It has become a whale watching center due to the many different species of whales that frequently enter its harbour. We will visit the whale museum during our time here.
The Husavik Whale Museum was founded in 1997. Its foremost aim is to provide detailed and interesting information about whales and their
habitat. In the 1.600m house you can find on display whale skeletons of several species and fascinating facts about the whales and life in the ocean.
Lunch in Husavik.
After lunch we will enjoy Myvatn nature baths and visit Namaskard geothermal field. The Myvatn is similar to the Blue Lagoon, but more intimate and less touristic.
When we have enjoyed the bath our journey will continue to Akureyri. On the way we will take an ice cream stop at Holtsel farm, where they make their own ice cream and then we will take a brief
stop at the Christmas house, where it is Christmas all year around.
The tour ends in Akureyri for dinner and overnight.
Akureyri is Iceland’s second city and has a population of 18,000. It nestled at the head of Iceland’s longest (60km) fjord, Eyjafjordur.
DAY 7 – Travel to Borgarfjordur (B, L, D)
After breakfast we will start our journey to the west side of the country, Borgarfjordur. On our way we will take a lunch stop at Gauksmyri farm and see a short horse show and commentary that will educate the audience about the Icelandic horse. After the show you are invited to take a look at the stables and get to know the horses.
Next, we continue our journey to
Borgarfjordur and stop at
Deildartunguhver, a hot geo-thermal
spring, Europe’s most powerful, and Hraunfossar, a spectacular waterfall that runs through lava.
The tour ends in Hotel Husafell for dinner and overnight. Hotel Husafell has been called a unique gem set in a magnificent landscape.
(Possible to see the northern lights if weather conditions are good).
DAY 8 – Into the glacier (B, L, D)

Drive to Reykjavik for dinner and overnight
